Picking a niche is the first thing that you need to do if you want to start a blog.  If you do it right, you can find market segments that you can target and build your business around it.

What To Look For In A Niche?

Firstly you need to understand what to look for in a potential niche.  You can find a niche that you don’t know much by researching it or you can focus on subjects that you are passionate about. Think about these questions below:

  1. What can people buy from this niche?
  2. Who else is marketing in this niche?
  3. Are people looking for this niche on the internet?
  4. What solutions can you provide in this niche?

1) Do People Buy From This Niche Online?

Not everything sells online, Some items, such as shoes, for example, really don’t sell well online because there is such a variation in styles and fits.  Very few people order their shoes from the Internet because they prefer to try them on first.

Expensive jewelry and watches are other things that just don’t sell online.  If you are going to spend $10,000 on a watch then you are hardly going to order it from the Internet to save a couple of hundred bucks!

If there is no one promoting the product you have to consider 2 things:

  1. Is there are a market for this niche?
  2. Can this be an untapped niche?

3) Do People Search For This Niche On The Internet?

This is where you determine whether there is enough traffic in the niche that you have chosen. Traffic is one of the key success factors that must be considered when you begin the process to find the best blogging niche.

If there are not enough searches per month then you will get very little traffic, meaning your earnings will be low.  You have to balance traffic versus earnings.

So a niche where you get paid $500 a sale may be profitable to go in with only 500 searches a month, but a niche that only pays $5 a sale won’t be worth as much to you.

Remember that the more profitable niches and high traffic niches are likely to have much more competition, meaning it could be harder for you to rank well in the search engines and start to earn.

Step #1: Identify your interests

  1. Your first task is to write down a list of all the things you are good at, all of your skills, and all the things that get your fires burning, no matter how silly, trivial, or small they could be.
  2. Use the Google suggestion tool to narrow down your niche ideas. Let’s say you type ‘baby food’ in the Google search bar – Google will give you a list of other keywords that people are typing for in the same niche. These keywords can be your niche. So instead of selecting baby food as your niche, you can decide to go down the baby food processor niche.

Pause reading this guide just for a moment and write down all your interest topics. Think about your hobbies, interests, sports teams you follow, job and other things that you know well.

Now you should have a few ideas.

Step #2: Find the competition level

In this step, you need to select keywords that you are interested in and are relevant to your site to determine how much competition there is for that keyword and whether you can rank for it.

This is done by going to Google.com and typing in intitle:” your keyword”. This shows you how many people are directly competing for this keyword.

Use this process to narrow down and find your niche for blogging. So what is the right number? That is hard to say. It is comparative. If my main selected niche – baby food has 168 million listings and I can narrow it down to 10 million or less – I would consider that niche.

Another consideration to find out the competition level.

  1. On top of this, you need to look at the actual results in Google to see what the top 10 sites.
  2. Is there user-generated content like Youtube and Ezinearticles?
  3. Are they authority sites? Manufacturer sites? Sites built by Internet marketers?
  4. If there are a lot of sites with user-generated content then you will find it relatively easy to get into the top ten.  If there are a lot of established authority sites then you may struggle.

You repeat this process for various keywords until you have ten to fifteen niches.

Step #3: Check Google Trends to make sure your niche is stable or growing in demand

Once you have chosen a list of niches with the right amount of search volume and commercial value, go to Google Trends to check the demand over time.

Once you have gotten a list of all upward trends – you are ready to move on to the next step.

Step #4: Use Google’s Keyword Planner tool to find the search volume of keywords related to your niche

Go to the Google Keyword tool and type in your keyword (or keywords).

You can pick a specific location to see how many searches there are in that country. You can also target specific languages. These filters are very useful if you want to target a specific country.

Click on the keyword box to add more filters to your keyword match.

You can choose Exact, Broad, or Phrases.

  • Select [Exact] to give you a more accurate reflection of searches.
  • With a Broad search if I was researching dog training it would mean any search that had those to words in like “where is the best training course for a dog in Atlanta” would count as a search.
  • Phrases are similar to Broad but it applies to longer sentences or sometimes known as long-tail keywords.

You can select more than one option here if you want to run a comparison between Broad, Exact, and Phrases to see the difference.  Remember though that Exact is a more accurate reflection of the amount of traffic you are going to get.

Look at those keywords’ monthly search volume. Pick the niches that are in the middle. The Avg Monthly Searches column shows you how many people are searching for the keyword across the internet.

Step #5: Use Google’s Keyword Planner tool to find the commercial value of keywords related to your niche

The competition section shows you how many people are paying to advertise for that keyword.  If this is high then it is an indicator that lots of people are paying for adverts relating to that keyword and so there is a market for that niche.

The Top Bid Page column shows you how much advertisers are willing to pay for that keyword – from lowest to highest. The higher the price – the higher the value of the keyword and the higher the competition.

Step #6: Start with 1 niche

You now have a few niches that have the right competition, demand over time, enough search volume, and has commercial value. This will be the niche you want to get into. Start with 1 niche before you move to another one.

Finding Products To Promote

When it comes to finding products to promote there are several different places to look.  You may want to look at Clickbank, Amazon, the CPA networks, and so on.

The Clickbank marketplace is a good source for digital products.  There are a lot of different products in various categories that you can sell.  You can find the marketplace here.

Below is an example of a product in the Clickbank marketplace. You can see that it tells you how much you earn (on average) per sale and gives you a description of the product.  Some of these descriptions will have a link to a webpage with affiliate resources, which could be useful if you use them.

You can see how much you make on the initial sale ($36.62), and the percentage you earn per sale, which in this case is 41%.

Next, you can see the average rebill total – which means this is a monthly membership (recurring income – which means you get paid every month from the initial sale).

The important figure is the Gravity (Grav) which here is 59.94.  This is an indicator of how well the product is selling in the Clickbank Marketplace. The higher the gravity the better it is.

You can also search for reviews of the product to see if it is any good or not. It is in your best interest to find a product that sells well and converts well.

Amazon is the world’s largest marketplace and there a plenty of opportunities to help you find the best niche for your blogging.

These are mostly physical products that are shipped to your customer’s doors.  The advantage to you of promoting something from Amazon is that they a global brand that is trusted and recognized by millions and millions of people across the world.

Here you can see the rating and the likes given to the product by the people who have bought. This gives you an idea of just how popular the product is.

Some products can sell well and have a low star rating whereas others can sell few and have a high star rating.

Further down the page, you will find more detailed information about the customer reviews.  When you are selecting a product from Amazon you want at least 4 stars in the review to make sure it is a top seller. Sometimes it is worth promoting a product with fewer stars, but you do not want to move below 3.

Check out the customer reviews. If there are a lot of bad reviews then you may want to skip promoting the product because many of these don’t sell. People tend to look at the reviews on Amazon before they buy so they are a major influencer for your potential customers.

Amazon Best Seller

Amazon provides some further help for you in finding products to promote by providing a list of the best selling products on the site! At Amazon Best Seller you can look through all the different categories and see what products are selling well.  These will give you a very good idea of popular products to promote.
